WHAT IS KRAV MAGA?
Krav Maga is the official defensive tactics/self defense system for the Israeli Defense Forces and hundreds of Elite US military and Law enforcement agencies.
Initially, it focuses on strikes (punches, kicks, knees, and elbows) and defending against the most common threats; chokes, bear hugs, headlocks, and punches) and physical conditioning. As you progress it’s about defending against a wider variety of attacks, learning more strikes, ground fighting, and defenses against guns, knives, and sticks. Later, practitioners work on sparring, learning to attack, and learning to be the aggressor using weapons as you would do in battle.
The Krav Maga system has received international recognition as an innovative and highly practical self-defense system. The most important and striking characteristics of the Krav Maga self defense system are: Efficient Training Period. Trainees attain a high level of proficiency in a relatively short period of instruction. Retention of Training. Because the system is built upon common principles and natural/instinctive movements, men and women retain Krav Maga techniques with minimal review and practice. Practical Techniques. The core emphasis of Krav Maga is on effectiveness and simplicity. This system provides realistic defenses against a variety of aggressive attacks, whether the assailant is armed or unarmed.
Performance Under Stress. Training styles and methods unique to the Krav Maga system provide reality-based training designed to improve the trainee’s emotional and physical response to danger. These training methods develop the ability to recognize danger at the earliest stages, react without hesitation, and escalate and de-escalate with the appropriate level(s) of force.
These are all crucial factors that must be considered in the development of any self defense program. Krav Maga is particularly relevant to modern-day people because most cannot afford the luxury of prolonged training courses. Krav Maga is quick, effective, and both easily learned and retained.
HOW IS KRAV MAGA DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS?
Krav Maga is not another self-defense system based on traditional martial arts approaches. It is a modern, reality-based method of training characterized by coherent and logical techniques that build up easily and naturally, featuring simple movements of the human body. Because the Krav Maga system is well-integrated, common defensive principles apply to a variety of attack scenarios. Thus, the system can be learned in a relatively short period of instruction. The techniques are easy to retain and can be performed under stress. This hybrid system incorporates techniques from many styles, including boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Muay Thai, but it does not adhere to any classic or traditional school of thought. It has no sporting or competition aspect.
WHAT IS THE TYPICAL CLASS LIKE?
We will start with a 10-15 minute warm up to elevate your heart rate, pump blood into your muscles, and prepare your body for the work to come. Most new trainees will find themselves looking at the clock about 5 minutes in, and wondering what they’ve gotten themselves into. Then we will let you catch your breath while we lead you through some active stretching.
Next, we will do about 30 minutes of combatives training on upper and lower body strikes (punches, kicks, knees, and elbows). Throughout this portion of class we will demonstrate and teach the techniques, lead you through some practice work, and then let you practice live to pads, heavy bags, etc. We will do different drills to train speed and accuracy, improve endurance.
The last part of class is devoted to self-defense techniques. Again, we will demonstrate the techniques, take you through a series of practice stages, and let you practice with live partners. The class usually culminates in a stress drill where you will practice your newly learned techniques while under stress in order to develop your aggression and fighting spirit.
DO I NEED ANY MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE?
Krav Maga is designed to take adults with little or no previous experience and bring them to a high level very quickly. Each and every technique is demonstrated, practiced, and then performed live with constant observation and correction by our Certified Krav Maga instructors.
DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE TO DO KRAV MAGA?
No. In fact, taking classes is the best way to get into shape. Our class format is created to allow trainees of different fitness levels to fully participate to the best of each individual’s ability. We have collegiate athletes working out alongside grandparents, each leaving equally exhausted, having been pushed to their respective limits each training session. Because we use natural movements and a combination of aerobic and anaerobic training, the human body responds to consistent training by creating strong lean muscle and eliminating excess weight.

Krav Maga is designed to take adults with little or no previous experience and bring them to a high level, very quickly. Each and every technique is demonstrated, practiced, and then performed live with constant observation and correction by our Certified Krav Maga instructors.
We offer weekly intro classes, where the Krav Maga training focuses on the very basic techniques and concepts in a slower, gentler, and more controlled environment.
For women who may not wish to train with men, we have monthly classes devoted exclusively to you. We also offer private personal lessons that allow you to try out Krav Maga at your own pace, one-on-one.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO TRAIN?
Training twice weekly is frequent enough to improve conditioning and retain techniques. The more you train, the faster you will learn. Remember that Krav Maga is a perishable skill. Consistency over time is much more useful than packing in a bunch of classes in your first month.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO THE INSTRUCTORS HAVE?
East Texas Krav Maga has created more than 12 certified Instructors for its own staff, including firearms and fitness training. East Texas Krav Maga is recognized Tactical Krav Maga as an Official Training Center. The East Texas Krav Maga instructors have trained thousands of civilians, law enforcement, and military in Krav Maga Combatives, preparing them for deployment. East Texas Krav Maga is also the training ground for Defensive Tactics Instructors from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. You are in very good hands when training at East Texas Krav Maga.
There is very little difference, and actually no difference in the combatives and self-defense techniques you will learn.
The difference comes in the finish. While civilians should run from danger and can disengage as soon as a safe opportunity to do so presents itself, Police and Military personnel must run toward the danger. Police and Military personnel have the objective of gaining safe control of the situation and the option of going to higher force options when necessary.
Therefore, the endings are different, with police and military learning to safely search, take custody, or go to higher force options. These specialists also train to retain their weapons while fighting and to consider use of force issues when engaging.
IS KRAV MAGA SUITABLE FOR WOMEN?
Krav Maga is particularly well suited for women, because it was perhaps the only modern self-defense system designed for smaller, less experienced people to use against larger, aggressive attackers. Originally developed in Israel, it had to work for everyone, b/c everyone served in the armed forces. Men, Women, bakers, lawyers, servers, accountants, etc. It had to work for everyone, and be able to be taught, retained, and effectively executed in a reasonably short period of time, i.e. 40 hours.
We have classes devoted exclusively to women, and do seminars on a regular basis. These classes teach women how to defend against common chokes, grabs, bear hugs, and other attacks, including fighting on the ground and when confronted by a weapon. We emphasize realistic scenarios and realistic defenses.
Krav Maga training methods have been carefully developed with valuable input from law enforcement officials, criminal prosecutors, psychologists, physicians, and rape prevention counselors. The program deals specifically with how and where women are commonly attacked. Women are taught how to safely and effectively fend off an attacker with punches, elbows, knees, and kicks.
Classes incorporate training methods to build women’s fighting spirit and to train them how to respond both mentally and physically in a time of need, eliminating the danger of “freezing” or “shutting down.”
WHAT AGES DO YOU TRAIN?
We train from ages 14 and up
DOES KRAV MAGA HAVE A RANKING SYSTEM?
Yes, Krav Maga has six levels with corresponding belts. Students start in Level 1 classes as a White Belt student; higher ranked belts are earned in the following order: Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Brown, Black. To earn the next belt, students must take a test to prove competency in each level’s techniques.
WHAT IF I HAVE AN INJURY?
As an adult program, we are able to accommodate de-conditioned men and women. Many of our trainees come in with bad knees, backs, necks, etc., or other previous injuries. The need for self-defense is equally, if not more, important for you. We welcome the opportunity to show you how much you can still accomplish in terms of physical fitness and self-defense.
WHAT IF I HAVE A DISABILITY?
Our goal is to make every individual safer, regardless of their circumstances or abilities. We have trained people of all ranges of cognitive or physical abilities. Our instructors are all trained to modify the techniques and drills to every person’s ability level.
WHAT TYPE OF CLOTHING DURING TRAINING
We often get asked, “What should I wear to class?” The simple answer is athletic clothes: t-shirt, shorts and sneakers. The reality is, that answer doesn’t really address the unique needs of our members. Our classes are demanding and require a lot of movement. Trainees need to wear clothes that are supportive, durable, and provide adequate coverage.
Learning self-defense requires close contact with other people. With that in mind, please be aware of your own personal hygiene. Deodorant and clean clothes are necessary and are very much appreciated by your classmates and instructors. If you are taking classes back-to-back, having a fresh change of clothes, especially a clean, dry t-shirt is strongly encouraged.
There are a lot of motivating factors that bring people to ETKM for Krav Maga training. For some it’s about walking in peace and learning to protect oneself – for building confidence and gaining the skill to stand up and fight back if needed. For others, it is about getting in shape and learning a new skill. For some, it’s just a really fun workout and a great way to meet fun people. You have the right to speak up for yourself. You have the right to sit out of any part of class if you aren’t comfortable. This could be for any reason, including an injury, fatigue, emotional discomfort, or simply a feeling. You don’t need to explain yourself. A simple “I need a break,” is sufficient for any Instructor here. You have the right to change training partners. If at any time you find yourself in a East Texas Krav Maga class and you don’t feel safe, please tell the Instructor. You have the right to leave class.
